What is XMPP/Jabber and why is it used?
Does it really belong on a mail server?

XMPP is a InstantMessaging protocol based on xml.
Mostly known for being fairly privacy friendly.

What XMPP has to do with a Mailsystem is beyond me.

Yes I find that has also not really do to something on a mail-server, if it is optional and we can turn it off somehow that it at least consumes no resources, is a nice feature for others 🙂

Maybe we use it some day, I hope one is still enlightened what it has to do with it and what must be reconfigured or changed.

omexlu ah sorry :p My answer is related to ‘can we turn it off?’ I only know that @diekuh mentioned in telegram it’s optional but I cant see a SKIP_JABBER variable in mailcow.conf yet.

Maybe @diekuh have more visibility for the other questions

I will wait until I can fully disable the xmpp server inside to upgrade my compose. I think that email is hard enough to maintain in a black box.

I would know how must i setup an Nginx reverse Proxy to try xmpp.

Lars XMPP does not need to be proxied through nginx. Just the HTTP Upload Component will be proxied.

About the disabeling feature - it seems that the image checks if at least one domain has xmpp enabled. If that is not the case the image idles. Which isn’t perfect but its something 😃

It does idle when it is not enabled for a domain. We need this for various other checks. It does not hurt at all.

Thanks, but there seem to be a lot of problems in this regard, so I don’t dare to update for the time being.

Would still be great if you would give out more information about what all needs to be changed and adjusted (ports [firewall] etc.).

You could use any gmx email or anything else for that. Hosting this on the own server is kind of unnecessary?

Did you delete all your messengers when you installed mailcow?

Just don’t enable it and you are done, what’s the deal?

I already want to use it, for example to chat with friends like in ICQ times or to create chat rooms.

I just do not understand how it works 🙈

Where is the admin panel for the xmpp in mailcow, or is it managed by the xmpp client?
Any friend who has an xmpp enabled email address with whom I can write and who can enter my chat rooms?

I have never had xmpp, so I do not fully understand the principle of it 😅

The username for an xmpp account is a Jabber ID (JID) that’s like username@server. After you enabled XMPP for a Domain in Mailcow (make sure im.<yourdomain.tld> points to your mailcow server, if you didn’t change the XMPP-Prefix to something else than im.), you can use a xmpp client and login with <mailboxname>@im.<yourdomain.tld and the mailbox password. You can edit a mailbox in mailcow to enable or disable it as a xmpp account and make it an xmpp admin if you want to.

ejabberd is included in mailcow, no need for a separate xmpp-server. ^^
Otherwise I can recommend prosody.
