iPhone - Using ActiveSync - Mail Not Auto Refreshing or Alerting on New Mail

Hey All-

I’m unsure what’s occuring and perhaps this is normal? Using iOS with the built in iOS Mail app. The account is configured as ActiveSync.

My contacts, calendars and e-mail are all there - sending and receiving without issue. However, it appears the e-mail is not auto refershing (being pushed automatically). Instead, I have to open the mail app, scroll down and then it will check and retrieve mail. I also don’t get any notifications on my screen or lockscreen when new mail has arrived.

Any ideas what’s occuring here and how to fix?

This is probably due to Apples “energy saving” implementation.
Also SOGo workers need some time, so expect delays of 15-30 seconds after the mail has arrived.
You do have enough SOGo workers configured? Each ActiveSync device which is connected to mailcow needs one SOGO worker.

E.g. you have 10 users, each has 3 devices using activesync (1 PC, 1 Mobile phone, 1 tablet), then you would need at least 30 workers only for that plus ~10 workers for general tasks, so you need to set the parameter
WOWorkersCount = 40; in the sogo.conf file

Another error would be incorrect reverse proxy (if you have one) configuration leading to timeouts - check against the mailcow documentation for a working config.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Currently, the sogo.conf workers is at default of 20. Right now, its just me using the server with 2 active sync devices so I wouldn’t think thats a factor.

Whats the relation between pusher API and Active Sync - I was reading that and initially I thought I needed to configure pusher to make it push notifications to the device but now I am not so sure I need that.

It sounds like by default, it should be polling for new mail and auto updating but for some reason it’s not… on the android test device using gmail as the mail client and the same account configured as active sync it works as expected.

You mean the “Pushover” integration? That is optional and is not needed when using ActiveSync.
You can use Pushover if you configure IMAP on the iOS devices, because Apple (again they are really breaking everything for the sake of energy saving) does not support IMAP IDLE which would provide push as well.

You could try a different mail app, like Bluemail. Should work properly with ActiveSync.

Yes, pushover integration - I think you answered my confusion on that, thanks. It’s for notifications when using IMAP.

I tried BlueMail, it keeps trying to configure the account as IMAP, but I ended up selecting manual and active sync and it worked. I’m getting notified as expected - I guess it’ll be changing my e-mail client preferences.

Thanks for the tip… based on this, it seems to rule out anything on the mailcow end.
