Testing from Gmail. I have domain.com. I have alias.com, set up as a domain alias in Mailcow. It has all its own DNS, DKIM, SPF, etc. as one requires. For example purposes, I have user1@domain.com and I have groupAlias@domain.com established and both work.
Sending to user1@domain.com works.
Sending to groupAlias@domain.com correctly relays to user1@domain.com
Sending to user1@alias.com correctly relays to user1@domain.com
Emailing to groupAlias@alias.com does NOT send to groupAlias@domain.com
I get a bounce with:
550 5.1.1 : Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual mailbox table
How can I resolve this?
Thanks in advance!
Okay, on a whim I tried something and it worked. I don’t like it, but it worked. Fortunately I have a low quantity of email aliases for these domains.
Turns out, you have to a separate alias in the in the email alias editor. With past email servers, I’ve configured each domain’s email aliases within that domain’s editor. In the case of mailcow, it’s a separate window that combines all email aliases together. It’s been a while since I set up our mail server (a few months), so it didn’t occur to me to look there.
I created groupAlias@alias.com pointing to groupAlias@domain.com so that any changes to the group membership, I don’t have to edit twice. I just kick responsibility over to where it belongs.
I’m a little surprised that all domain aliases don’t just handle this automatically. I would think any email sent to a domain alias address would check the email boxes and aliases at the destination domain before rejecting. If one had a large amount of aliases, this would be a bit of a hassle.
Still, mailcow is a GREAT product and I absolutely love it!
Sorry, a “too soon reply” makes itself an edit. So accepting this answer of “See Above for Solution” is it doesn’t auto-merge, too.
