Is a mailbox archiving feature planned?

Hi everyone,

Is there any plan to add a mailbox archiving function to mailcow?

What I mean by “archiving”: instead of just deleting or disabling a mailbox, mailcow would pack the whole mailbox into a single compressed archive (tar.gz / zip of the Maildir, or an export file) and remove the live mailbox from the mail flow. The archive would stay available for download or restore later.

Today, as far as I can tell, the only options in the UI are to disable the mailbox (it keeps using storage and still counts against the domain quota) or to delete it (data is gone). Anything in between has to be done manually on the host with dsync or tar.

Is something like this on the roadmap, or is there an existing approach I’ve missed?

The zipfile would also use the storage.
Using a proper archiving solution would be the better way:

Mailpiler is cool, but it’s also a pain to maintain and keep up to date. 😉

Also, the integration doesn’t really help with the storage problem, because it would still run on the same server as Mailcow and therefore require storage there as well, which is definitely not cheap, especially on a VPS. 😉

But yes, I agree: a proper mail archiving solution is the answer. The archive should probably be stored on a local NAS or something similar, though, to save storage space on the mail server.
