Permission denied for Dovecot

Hello! I’m trying to set up a new storage location for my Mailcow server, the folder is located on a different device on Windows and is mounted through fstab. When I attach it to Mailcow using the new method (ln -s), Dovecot gives me the following errors (user and domain changed for privacy):

imap(user@maildomail.ru)<3005><E1bM5nFYXqzAqAJB>: Error: Mailbox Drafts: rename(/var/vmail/maildomain.ru/user/Maildir/.Drafts/dovecot-uidlist.tmp, /var/vmail/maildomain.ru/user/Maildir/.Drafts/dovecot-uidlist) failed: Permission denied
imap(user@maildomain.ru)<3005><E1bM5nFYXqzAqAJB>: Error: Mailbox Drafts: Saving mail: utime(/var/vmail/maildomain.ru/user/Maildir/.Drafts/tmp/1786096089.M966745P3005.e5e0bbd5731a) failed: Operation not permitted

I already ran ‘chown -R 5000:5000 /folderlocation’ and ‘chmod -R 777 /folderlocation’, but it didn’t fix the issue. Is there something I’m missing? Mailcow works fine if I use a new local folder, not the shared one. Older method gives the same issue.

There are 2 levels of permissions. File system level which is what you tried, and share level which you have to check on windows.

Another thing: SMB file system probably has not the same file system or rights model features like ext3 or ext4. We had the case that someone was trying the same, but on a S3 filesystem. it did not work.
You should try NFS instead.
