Assistance Needed: Mailcow Server Becomes Unreachable Twice Daily

I’ve been using Mailcow for the past two years on an Ubuntu server (1 core, 2GB memory, 4.5GB swap, version 20.04), running Mailcow version 2022-11b.

Initially, everything worked smoothly until May of this year when issues started arising. The Mailcow service becomes unreachable intermittently.

I’ve been unable to identify the root cause of the issue. Restarting the cloud server temporarily resolves the problem. Initially, after a restart, the issue would reoccur after about two to three days. However, it now happens twice a day.

If anyone has insights into this issue or requires additional information from my Mailcow infrastructure setup, please advise on how to obtain it as I am relatively new to managing Mailcow. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe it was hacked. You missed on so many criticial security updates…

And your server is not meeting the minimum requirements regarding CPU and Memory. Try first to fix that:

My advice: Reinstall mailcow from scratch and restore the backup, or at least the vmail directory. If you are not able to do so I would strongly suggest you go for hosted mailcow instead of trying to run it yourself.

I want to learn more about this, so I will continue with the self-hosted plan. I am considering upgrading the infrastructure and Mailcow.

I will keep you updated on the progress.

Can you recommend some SOPs from a security standpoint and any key considerations for setting up new infrastructure and migrating emails?

Please follow the documentation, it answers most things, and mailcow is security wise good covered out of the box, if you update it regularily.

Regarding migration with backup you will find that also in the documentation. vmail/maildir directory import there are several threads here in the forum covering this already.
