Nginx mail proxy

I have a nginx reverse proxy in front of mailcow and I have I am able to reverse proxy http/https traffic with no problems. I need to be able to also reverse proxy imap/imaps pop3/pop3 smtps etc back to mailcow. According to Nginx docs located here: https://docs.nginx.com/nginx/admin-guide/mail-proxy/mail-proxy/ I need to specify the HTTP authentication server in order to authenticate email clients. Where exactly would I point Nginx auth_http directive to authenticate the email clients?

I doubt someone in the mailcow community will be able to do that for you. :/

Having an authentication server is obligatory for NGINX mail server proxy. The server can be created by yourself in accordance with the NGINX authentication protocol which is based on the HTTP protocol.

I’m not expecting anyone to do it for for me. I thought I could just point Nginx to mailcow and have mailcow as the authentication server. I didn’t think I had to create one from scratch.

The auth server (I’d call it a wrapper) needs to be written.
